May 24, 2016District 200 offices are currently operating on a four day work week through August 5th. Buildings are open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and closed on Fridays. Employees work ten hours each day to accommodate the change.
April 5, 2016Be a hero for kids with cancer! Join the St. Baldrick's event at Westwood Elementary, and whether you decide to shave your head, volunteer, or donate, we hope you'll be a part of the excitement! Our event will take place on Friday, April 15th at 12:45 p.m. Mr. Eggert, Ms. Griffin and three Westwood students have been brave enough to volunteer as “shavees,” and many others are helping in other ways. We hope you’ll be able to join us.
December 10, 2015Once again the Westwood students and families are showing their true holiday spirit of giving. During the month of December, the Westwood Food Train is parked in our school entryway, outside of the front office, collecting canned goods and all kinds of non-perishable food items.
November 11, 2015With 1:1 Chromebooks coming into our building next year we are starting to work on the skills necessary to be successful in that environment during our computer lab time. Along with the skills we normally focus on, we are starting to incorporate more use of Canvas (our learning management system) and the GAFE (Google Apps for Education) suite. If you are not familiar with learning management systems they help to reduce digital sprawl or the need to go to many different places online to gain access to our educational materials. The LMS becomes a home base for the class, it enables students to access assignments, lessons, calendars, discussions, and handouts, turn-in assignments, interact with their classmates, and much more.
November 11, 2015Westwood's theme for this year is "I Can" / "Yo Puedo." Ownership - one of our 8 Keys of Excellence teaches the students to "own the choices that they make and the results that follow." Teachers set literacy and math learning objectives in their classrooms that are written in "I Can" / "Yo Puedo" form. The students then know what they are expected to demonstrate at the end of that lesson or unit.
November 3, 2015Westwood students and staff are not only busy throughout the school day, but after school as well. Our teachers are very excited about bringing extra opportunities to our students in the form of Art, Chess and Science Clubs. We have had an overwhelming response from our students. These clubs meet after school here at Westwood providing not only instruction in these areas but loads of fun as well.
November 3, 2015We remind students of the proper uses of online resources at the beginning of each school year and throughout the year. We talk to them about never giving out personal information online and making sure that they always know who they are communicating with online. See "Read more" below for a link to an internet safety site with some tips to think about in your home.
